“When I compose a picture, I always think about the direction. In western society we read texts from left to right. Unconsciously we read pictures the same way. We also see time as a horizontal line, from left to right. In children's book, a figure who is on its way somewhere will often be drawn going from left towards the right. If the figure meets something evil, for example a monster, it will come from the right-hand side of the picture. When the figure in the end of the story is on its way home, he/she is drawn going in the left direction.
The boy on the moped in this lithography is therefore going away. He could be any teenager, anywhere in Sweden. He is not anywhere since he drives through a beech forest. The trees on the right side of the picture are pine trees. The incentive to drive through the wet weather could be a reaction of strong feelings within him. Maybe he has a final destination, or it could be an aimless drive. Serpentine Drive alludes both to the road which he is driving on, and a way of driving.”
