About

Wetterling Gallery proudly presents the third solo exhibition with Liva Isakson Lundin at the gallery. The exhibition title, Takt / Tact, originates from the Latin word tactus, which means to touch or to move. Isakson Lundin will exhibit a wide range of works on paper, accompanied with three large scale sculptures. Opening Reception will take place on October 6, 5 - 8 pm. Welcome!

Perhaps commonly associated with being a sculptor, Liva Isakson Lundin’s artistic practice includes both installations and paintings. Following spontaneity, Isakson Lundin’s work process is based on experiments with materials and their qualities, properties, and possibilities. By trying to capture a sensitivity within the industrial materials used in her sculptures, she investigates how they behave on their own contra in relation to the spatial site. Recurring is a fleeting moment of reliance, where the different components of the work take turns on stabilising or burden each other. The paintings, as well as the sculptures, departs from a search for possible emotional structures, within the material and process.

As a reaction to her recent work with public installations, often in a great scale with long lead-times and detailed schedules, Isakson Lundin has also been revisiting more direct and quick ways of expression. This resulted in a new series of works on paper. Having recently concluded a residency at NARS (The New York Art Residency and Studios) Foundation in Brooklyn, NYC, the change of setting contributed to a different way of working where the meditative state of painting could evolve freely. Layering oil on paper, the works are set within a colour scheme of indigo, blue okra, and charcoal. The result depicts more than thirty works, varying in size from modest to large scale.

Rather than merely being on display, Isakson Lundin’s sculptures interact with the exhibition space as they are finalized on site. In Takt / Tact, three sculptures will accompany the series of works on paper. The sculptures consist of thin sheets of stainless-steel, balancing on podiums with wires attached to the walls or ceiling, creating a feeling of thin drawings within the room.

In conjunction to the exhibition, a book featuring the essay Liva Isakson: The Persistence of Modernist Art, written by New York-based art journalist Jonathan Goodman will be published.

Liva Isakson Lundin (b. 1990) holds an MFA from the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm.
